A police officer who fatally shot a mentally ill woman in her New York apartment in 2016 after she brandished scissors and a bat was acquitted by a judge Thursday. New York Police Department Sgt. Hugh Barry was found not guilty of murder, manslaughter and criminally negligent homicide in the death of Deborah Danner. Defense attorney Andrew Quinn said "we've always felt confident we would win but you never know" until the verdict is announced.

On the same day the New York State Department of Corrections released a report that found violent incidents at Rikers Island increased in the last year and warning it might close the jail before New York City does, the mayor held a news conference to announce the lowest inmate population at Rikers in five years, the lowest jail population the city's seen in 35 years, and the lowest incarceration rate of any major city in America.

Four Rikers Island inmates accused of brutally attacking a New York City correction officer pleaded not guilty in court Monday. The attack took place on Saturday evening in the George Motchan Detention Center in the sprawling jail complex. The officer suffered a fractured spine and swelling on his brain. Officer Jean Souffrant, 39, was in the ICU of a hospital after the attack that was caught on camera.

A weeks-long dispute among some teenagers boiled over into a violent classroom fight that ended with one boy dead, another clinging to life, and a third in police custody Wednesday in the Bronx. The fight broke out during the third period inside a 5th-floor classroom at Public School 67 on Mohegan Avenue in the West Farms section of the borough, police said. A 15-year-old student and a 16-year-old student were stabbed in the chest, Chief of Detectives Robert Boyce said at a news conference Wednesday afternoon. Medics took the boys to St. Barnabas Hospital, where the 15-year-old died, Boyce said. The 16-year-old is in critical but stable condition.
