On May 19, Cristina and Maria Villon Bustillo accomplished the dream their parents had for them 11 years ago when they arrived in America. The identical twins, who had immigrated from Ecuador, graduated from St. John's University.

SAT 'adversity score'

First day of school

Wednesday marked the first day of the 2018?2019 school year for New York City public school students. The nation's largest school system enrolls 1.1 million students and employs more than 79,000 teachers in nearly 1,800 schools. Schools Chancellor Richard Carranza, who started his tenure in April, visited M.S. 137 in the Ozone Park section of Queens at about 6:30 a.m. He spoke with Fox 5 News about the year ahead.

New York University is offering free tuition for all of its medical students. Tuition had been set at about $55,000 for the coming year.

Walmart's college benefit

Walmart learned that more than most other things its associates wanted to obtain a college education on their way to a college degree. And so Walmart partnered with institutions to offer Walmart employees classes toward business and/or supply chain management degrees.

School founder on a mission

Dr. Nadia Lopez is a woman on a mission. And it is a simple one: To give every child the same opportunity when it comes to education. Lopez is the principal and founder of Mott Hall Bridges Academy, which opened in 2010 with only 39 students in one of the poorest neighborhoods in the city, the Brownsville section of Brooklyn.

Coaching on and off the field

Darrin Davis knows what it's like to be a really talented football player who was sought after by colleges across the country. But he also knows something far more important: that if one doesn't have the grades, all those skills mean nothing. When Darrin was graduating from high school, his low SAT scores denied him entry from one college after another. He now drills that lesson into his student players at Kipp High School In Newark, New Jersey.

NJ educator teaches 'adventure'

May is National Teacher Appreciation Month. One physical education teacher at Millburn High School in New Jersey deserves special recognition. Mark Friedrich spends most of his day with ropes and harnesses teaching students how to climb high. The health and phys ed teacher started working at Milburn High in 2004. In 2005, he began teaching an elective course called Adventure Education.

College student creates puppetry major

Sebastiano Ricci plans to pursue a profession as a puppeteer. So when the sophomore learned Adelphi University in Garden City, Long Island, didn't have puppetry classes, Ricci decided to take matters into his own hands by making a major out of Muppets. Ricci was always fascinated by the mechanics of puppetry. The 19-year-old was also on the shy side, so hiding behind the art gave him a voice.

School segregation in New York

Economic and racial segregation is nothing new in New York City public schools. It is actually one of the most divisive problems. The city's system is the third-most-segregated in the country, according to Molloy College Professor Allison Roda.

Publicolor annual gala

Some students don't respond well to traditional textbook teaching. That is where an organization called Publicolor comes in. It connects with students through art and design. Publicolor has been brightening up the community and changing lives for more than 20 years. Its gateway program Paint Club aims to improve education in youth by promoting an imaginative use of color in school buildings. It's easy to understand see why students get involved.
