Hurricane Laura forms; projected to strengthen before Gulf Coast landfall

Laura became a hurricane on Tuesday morning as it entered the warm and deep waters of the Gulf of Mexico, gathering strength on a path to hit the U.S. coastline early Thursday as a major hurricane that could unleash a surge of seawater higher than a basketball hoop and swamp entire towns.

Meteorologist Mike Woods says we are off to a mild start to the day with a fair sky and mild, muggy conditions. Today will be sunny early with more clouds developing as the day goes on. It will be hot and humid through the day leading up to some scattered showers and storms some of which could be in the strong to severe range. Today's high: 91 degrees. The showers will wind down this evening with lows in the mid to upper 60s. Tomorrow will be cooler, drier, and much more comfortable with highs in the lower 80s. But more tropical moisture with showers and storms will head to the Tri-State by the end of the week.

Meteorologist Audrey Puente says expect a few showers and storms to pass through later this afternoon with it will be quite warm and humid--feeling like we are in the dead of summer. Today's high: 88 degrees. It will be partly cloudy tonight with a few showers early, then mild and muggy again. Expect more storms tomorrow before cooling down Wednesday. And there are two storms in the tropics that we are tracking. We may even get some rain from those storms later in the week!

Meteorologist Mike Woods says we are looking for a mostly sunny day with warmer high temperatures heading into the mid-80s. It will be a bit more humid as the more "summer-like" weather returns to the Tri-State Region for a while. Tonight will be fair again with mild lows in the lower 70s. We will continue to heat up over the weekend with highs in the upper 80s to around 90 degrees. Also, be on the lookout for a few storms over the weekend and into next week.

Tropical Storm Laura officially formed after Hurricane Hunters found 45-mph winds and a center of circulation. It's the 11th named storm of the season, and also the earliest "L" name storm on record.
