Metro New Orleans has received more snowfall since the start of meteorological winter than many cold-weather cities across the country, including Philadelphia, New York and Anchorage, Alaska.

As the historic winter storm that traveled across the southern U.S. heads east, it's leaving snowfall from Texas to North Carolina. This image was captured by a NOAA satellite showing several inches of snow left on the ground.

The heaviest snowfall in the Sunshine State occurred around Pensacola, where spotters reported measuring amounts of 5-12 inches through Tuesday evening.

Winter is making its presence known in New York City, as the polar vortex is bringing brutally cold temperatures to the Tri-State area. But is relief on the way?

People living at the Polo Grounds Towers in Harlem say that temperatures in their apartments have dropped below 50 degrees as they wait for heat and hot water.

The scene along Lake Pontchartrain in New Orleans on Tuesday was surreal. Palm trees swayed in the wind amid falling snow and near-blizzard conditions, with wind gusts exceeding 45 mph.

Record-breaking snow accumulation was reported across the Florida Panhandle and prompted the Florida Highway Patrol to shut down some major roadways by early Tuesday evening.

The National Weather Service office in Lake Charles, Louisiana, said the winter storm has been producing blizzard conditions across southeastern Texas and southwestern Louisiana.

Starting this week into next, a lobe of the polar vortex will descend into the U.S. and bring with it brutally cold temperatures. Here's the forecast for this week:
