Lightning strike kills 1, injures 13 at NJ archery range

A 61-year-old man was killed and 13 others were injured after a lightning strike at a New Jersey archery range Wednesday evening.

What we know:

According to officials, a 61-year-old man was killed and 13 other people were injured after lightning struck in Jackson Township, Ocean County. About half of the people injured were children involved in the Jackson Scouts Troop 204.

FOX 5 NY's Hayley Fixler says multiple reports indicate the man was a volunteer instructor who was teaching a group of scouts how to shoot arrows.

Medics responded to an outdoor archery range on Perrineville Road around 7:15 Wednesday evening and immediately began applying medical aid to the various people suffering. According to the New York Times, that range is Black Knight Bowbenders.

The injured ranged in age from 7 to 61-years-old. The 61-year-old man died from his injuries.

The others at the scene were suffering from a variety of injuries, including burns and feeling sick. All the victims were taken to nearby hospitals for additional treatment.

There was a thunderstorm warning for the area at the time of the incident.

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy posted on X about the incident, calling for prayers for "everyone involved in this tragic incident."
