38 positive for coronavirus in New York City jails, including Rikers

New York City was hit by the nation’s largest coronavirus jail outbreak to date this week, with at least 38 people testing positive at the notorious Rikers Island complex and nearby facilities — more than half of them incarcerated men, the board that oversees the city's jail system said.

Rikers Island guard stabbed in neck

A correction officer at Rikers Jail was stabbed in the neck with a wooden object by an inmate, according to the Correction Officers' Benevolent Association.

New York City Council to vote on closing Rikers Island

The plan to close Rikers Island by 2026 and replace it with four smaller borough-based jails in Brooklyn, the Bronx, Manhattan and Queens is now in the hands of the New York City Council in a vote set to take place on Thursday.
