Trump hosting fundraiser to pay for 'Bridgegate' legal fees

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — Donald Trump is helping dig former rival Chris Christie and the New Jersey Republican Party out of big debt from the George Washington Bridge scandal.

The presumptive GOP presidential candidate, who five months ago was sharply critical of Christie over the issue, is hosting a fund raiser that could completely wipe out hundreds of dollars of debt that New Jersey Republicans still have from the 2013 scandal.

Prosecutors allege two former Christie allies shut down lanes to the bridge to retaliate against a Democratic mayor. Christie denies involvement and has not been charged.

Trump will attend a fund raiser for the state GOP to help it pay about $500,000 in legal fees.

Trump and Christie will headline the event and another fund raiser for Christie's roughly $250,000 presidential campaign debt.
