NEW YORK CITY - New York City faces a severe weather threat on Thursday, with the potential for widespread rain, thunderstorms and even the risk of tornadoes.

Many of the thunderstorms that develop will be more isolated or of the pop-up variety, with forecasters warning that some could reach strong to severe levels. While the greatest hazards will be damaging wind gusts, flooding, rain and lightning, some storms could produce tornadoes.

"We're still going to be dealing with showers and storms into the early part of the night," FOX 5 NY's Nick Gregory said.

The National Weather Service (NWS) has rain in the forecast for much of the day in New York City:
NYC weather hourly
- Thursday night: Showers and thunderstorms before 11 p.m., then a slight chance of showers. Low around 70. The chance of precipitation is 70%.
According to NWS Mount Holly, showers are expected through the night, getting weaker later as the storms reach the coast.
Ryder Cup weather forecast
- Friday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 80. West wind around 6 mph.
- Saturday: Partly sunny during the day, with a high near 78. A 50% chance of showers at night; cloudy with a low around 62.
- Sunday: A 30% chance of showers before 2 p.m. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 74.
Weather in NYC today: How much did it rain?
Local perspective:
New York City has seen about a third of an inch of rain in the last 24 hours. Rain totals were lower on Long Island, and in New Jersey, with Newark seeing .21 inches. The heaviest rain was seen northwest of NYC, with Scranton having nearly three inches of rain dumped on it on Thursday.
While the worst of Thursday's rain is behind us, the NWS in Mt. Holly says that there is still a threat of severe storms and flash flooding on Thursday night, particularly in southwest New Jersey and eastern Pennsylvania.
What's next:
The cold front will exit off the East Coast on Friday, bringing an end to the rainy weather on Saturday. But more is expected late Saturday into Sunday.

Hurricane Gabrielle path
Dig deeper:
Gabrielle has been downgraded from a hurricane to a post-tropical cyclone, and is currently less than 500 miles west of the Azores with sustained winds of 70 mph.

While no longer a hurricane, according to FOX Weather, the storm still poses "significant threats with heavy rain and high winds."
Tropical Storm Humberto
Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Humberto is continuing to become better organized as it spins across the Atlantic, and forecasters say it will likely strengthen into a major hurricane (Category 3 or higher) in the coming days.
