Iran strikes 3 Gulf Arab countries
Retaliatory attacks from Iran targeted Bahrain, Kuwait and Qatar in crossfire that again threatened an interim deal aimed at finding a way to end the war gripping the Persian Gulf.
The U.S. military hit a variety of military sites and port facilities early Wednesday following Iran’s targeting of several merchant vessels off the coast of Oman, sparking Iranian fire then as well.
But Thursday's attacks appeared bigger all around. There was no immediate word of damage in the three Gulf Arab countries. Kuwait’s military said it was actively intercepting incoming drones and missiles.
2nd round of strikes
U.S. Central Command revealed that American forces launched another round of strikes in its renewed attacks on Iran.
The military explained these latest attacks are meant to degrade Tehran's ability to threaten commercial vessels that try to pass through the Strait of Hormuz.
"The United States is holding Iran accountable for recent unjustified aggression against commercial shipping and civilian crews freely navigating a vital international waterway," CENTCOM wrote.
Iranian state media has reported explosions in the port city of Bandar Abbas and in Sirik, which is also along the southern coast.
What they're saying:
When asked about the status of the ceasefire, President Donald Trump spoke to reporters Tuesday saying, "For me, I think it’s over," adding negotiations continue but casting doubt on any positive outcome.
"As far as I'm concerned, it's just a waste of time," Trump said. "They can talk, but I think they're wasting their time. They're liars, they're cheats. They're sick people."
US launches new strikes
Trump's comments came just days after the U.S. launched multiple strikes on Iranian military targets in retaliation for attacks on commercial shipping vessels in the Strait of Hormuz.
U.S. Central Command posted to X saying they hit over 80 targets striking air defense systems, command and control networks, radar sites, anti-ship missile capabilities and over 60 small boats in and around the strait.
In response, Iran targeted American military sites in the gulf Wednesday after sanctions on their oil sales were reinstated.
Three tankers attacked in Strait of Hormuz
Earlier this week, British military officials said three tankers were hit by projectiles in the Strait of Hormuz.
The attacks come as Iran and the U.S. continue to differ on operations in the Strait of Hormuz.
Negotiations between the two nations have been put on hold due to the start of the daylong funeral for Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed by strikes in the first days of the war.
Last month, a memorandum of understanding for a ceasefire was reached to reopen the Strait of Hormuz while the two sides negotiated further details on Iran's nuclear program.
"The era of bullying and extortion is over," Iran’s Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf wrote on X. "It leads nowhere. We don’t fold."
