Long Beach wants beachgoers to stay off rock jetties

NEW YORK (FOX 5 NEWS) - A Long Island community that was hit hard by Hurricane Sandy wants beachgoers to stay away from jetties. You can sit next to or take pictures in front of the jetties in Long Beach, but don't go on them.

"They may look like big enticing rocks but they are slippery," City Manager Jack Schnirman said. "If you fall between them you can get quite hurt."

The rocks are to protect the coastline. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is building them up as part of a multimillion project expected to be finished spring.

Signs to stay off are posted by the ticket booth. Lifeguards and special officers are on patrol.

This is the first summer police are enforcing the restrictions. In the past, proper signs weren't posted. Fines range from $100 to $500. So far, no tickets have been written.

"Fining people for being on the jetties is not what we're looking to do this summer," Schnirman said. "We're looking to keep people off the jetties to keep them safe."

On hot days when the beach is packed you'll definitely get a daredevil. So follow the rules and you won't be fined.
