Cops: drunk bus driver took joyride

WESTBURY, N.Y. (AP) — State Police have arrested a New York City transit bus driver on drunken driving charges after stopping the bus on a suburban New York parkway. Alexander Copeland was arrested Sunday on the Northern State Parkway on Long Island. Copeland allegedly failed a sobriety test. Police say he had a blood-alcohol reading of 0.20 percent, more than double the legal limit of 0.08.

He was awaiting arraignment Monday. The name of his attorney was not immediately available.

A spokesman for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority says the bus was taken from a street near the Jamaica depot, where he worked, and was stopped about 16 miles away. He says Copeland had the day off and was not authorized to be driving.

The 52-year-old driver has been suspended without pay.
