Times Square re-zoning in the works

The re-zoning of Times Square got underway in an attempt to curtail peddling and panhandling.

Eight zones in the pedestrian plaza from 42nd St. to 47th St. will be painted with different colors designated for various groups and interests.

For example, the green zone will allow people to take in the sights of the 'crossroads of the world' and not be bothered.

The blue zone, about the length of a city bus, is where street performers will be allowed to entertain.

The purple zone is dedicated to express lanes where people can walk without commercial hassle.

The re-zoning will take about a week to complete.

The change is the result of heightened complaints about excessive peddling and panhandling in the area.
