Teen who died at basketball practice had heart anomaly

A New York City teen who died during basketball practice at a Queens school last year had an undiagnosed heart abnormality.

Lenny Pierre, started feeling lightheaded and shaky at basketball practice on Dec. 26, 2018 and then passed out at John Bowne High School in Flushing, Queens. EMS arrived and took him to New York Presbyterian Hospital in Queens but it was too late.

On Wednesday, the Meical Examiner announced that Pierre had died from cardiac arrest due to anomalous origin of the right coronary artery from the left sinus of valsalva.

"A major vessel that brings blood to the heart was in an abnormal location and resulted in his cardiac arrest," Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Barbar Sampson wrote in a statement to Fox 5 News.
