Students asked to list positive aspects of slavery
San Antonio, Texas - A charter school in San Antonio is apologizing after a teacher's assignment asked to list the positive and negative aspects of slavery.
The eighth grade American History class at Great Hearts Monte Vista North was given a homework assignment titled “The Life of Slaves: A Balanced View." It had one column for "Positive Aspects" and one for "Negative Aspects".
The school admits it was "very inappropriate and entirely inconsistent with Great Hearts philosophy and culture."
The school says the students were asked to reflect on the differing sides of slavery but said, "To be clear, there is no debate about slavery. It is immoral and a crime against humanity."
The school says the incident was the work of one teacher and it was a clear mistake.
In a statement the school said "we sincerely apologize for the insensitive nature of this offense. We want to thank the parents who voiced their concern and brought this to our attention."
The teacher has been placed on leave as the investigation continues. The school is also removing the textbook the class was using so it can be reviewed.
