Social media overexposure of American girls

FOX 5 NEWS - Children have an online presence often before they're even born. Their parents post pregnancy pictures. And after they're born it snowballs -- picture after picture after picture. A new book looks at what impact this is having on your children.

Kids are now being raised to be performers to please mom and dad. On top of that, author Nancy Jo Sales says she found that girls are being sexualized through social media at very young ages. And part of the problem, she says, is their own parents, such as exhibitionist moms who want to look hot. Some are competing with and some are helping their daughters to do the same.

Sales is a writer for Vanity Fair magazine and the author of the new book "American Girls: Social Media and the Secret Lives of Teenagers." She interviewed more than 200 girls in 10 states between the ages of 13 and 19. She found that girls are basing their self-worth on the number of likes and followers they get from posting provocative pictures.
