Power problem leaves 2 LIRR trains stuck in tunnel

NEW YORK (FOX 5 NY) - Multiple Long Island Rail Road trains were delayed and canceled during the Tuesday morning rush due to an Amtrak third rail power issue in the East River tunnel, according to the MTA.

Two LIRR trains were stuck underground for more than an hour as a result of the power loss. Amtrak said it was trying to determine the cause of the malfunction.

A rescue train was sent to tow the disabled trains into NY Penn Station. At least 1,000 commuters were aboard the trains, according to the FDNY.

LIRR representatives handed out water to passengers as they waited.

Commuters were warned to anticipate at least 30-minute delays westbound and at least 15 minute delays eastbound.

NJ Transit said the issue was also affecting its trains.  It also said speed restrictions due to ongoing Amtrak track work was adding to its woes.

Several lines of NYC Transit subways had been cross-honoring LIRR tickets.

Recent problems have plagued LIRR and New Jersey Transit commuters who use Penn Station.

Amtrak said last week that three tracks at a time will be closed as part of extensive repair work that's expected to inconvenience thousands of rail commuters this summer.
