'Pick of the Litter' follows puppies training to become guide dogs

The United States has nearly 400,000 working service dogs right now. And that number is just a fraction of the number who begin the journey as puppies. Most don't make the cut.

A new documentary film called Pick of the Litter follows the lives of five puppies from birth through their training to become guide dogs for the blind.

This film, from directors Dana Nachman and Don Hardy, has captured hearts and won awards at several film festivals.

Nachman came to Fox 5 to talk about what makes her film so special.

Pick of the Litter opens Friday, August 31, at the IFC Center in Manhattan.
