Peter Liang lawyer: juror may have lied

NEW YORK (AP) — The lawyers for a New York City police officer convicted of fatally shooting a man in the stairwell of an apartment building are asking for a new trial because a juror didn't disclose his father was convicted of manslaughter.

The Wall Street Journal reports the motion for a new trial in former officer Peter Liang's case was filed Tuesday.

Liang was convicted of manslaughter in February and fired.

His attorneys argue one of the jurors, 62-year-old Michael Vargas, said nobody in his close family had ever been accused of a crime. But Vargas told the newspaper his father had served time in prison for a manslaughter charge more than 40 years ago.

Prosecutors have asked a judge to sentence Liang to five years' probation and six months house arrest.
