NYPD: Cop shoots knife-wielding man in Brooklyn

NEW YORK (FOX 5 NY) - Police responding to a 911 call at an apartment building in Brooklyn fatally shot an emotionally disturbed man Monday after a stun gun failed to subdue him, sources told FOX 5 News.

The shooting took place just before 1 p.m. at the Flatbush Gardens apartment complex on New York Avenue near Foster Avenue in East Flatbush.

The NYPD said the man's mother called 911 to say that her son was acting erratically, the AP reported.

The man, later identified as Dwayne Jeune, 32, lunged with a "large carving knife" at officers, police said. One cop fired a stun gun at Jeune, who kept advancing and swinging the butcher knife at officers despite darts to his arm and chest.

Another officer shot him in the chest with a firearm, police said. Jeune died in the apartment, authorities said.

The officer who fired was reportedly taken to Kings County Hospital to be treated for ringing in the ear.

After the fatal police shooting of Deborah Danner, a woman in the Bronx, in October 2016, the NYPD began training some officers in handling violent mentally ill individuals. The city pledged more resources. But as of now, the only place worried family members can turn in a crisis is 911.
