NYPD and Pride Week
NEW YORK (FOX 5 NEWS) - He was the founder of NYPD's Gay Officers action league. Now the intersection of Washington Place and Avenue of the Americas will forever be known as "Sgt. Charles H. Cochrane Way."
The ceremony in Greenwich Village was the latest act of support from the NYPD toward the LGBTQ community following the attack on a gay nightclub in Orlando. The department also released a video of officers out and proud.
And even though the event was scheduled before the Florida tragedy, the welcoming of gay lesbian bisexual and transgender groups at department headquarters this week seemed to take on important meaning.
Recognizing a complicated relationship in the past and concerns about over policing during the upcoming Gay Pride Week, Commissioner Bill Bratton pledged support.
