New NYPD recruits sworn in
NEW YORK (FOX 5 NEWS) - Almost 700 NYPD recruits were sworn in Thursday as part of an expansion of the department that hasn't happened in 15 years. This was the result of a budget authorized by the City Council and Mayor Bill de Blasio. 1,300 new officers will be hitting the streets by December 2016. These recruits are the first class to be sworn in in the new $750 million training academy.
The dangers officers face evident just Wednesday night when three men fired shots at three plainclothes officers in fort Greene, Brooklyn. The officers were not hurt. One suspect was hit. All three suspects are now in custody.
Despite a string of shootings this summer, Police Commissioner Bill Bratton predicts the expansion of the force will have positive lasting effects on the entire city.
