New congestion surcharge now in effect
NEW YORK (FOX 5 NY) - Sticker shock. A new congestion pricing surcharge went into effect Saturday in New York City on cabs and for-hire vehicles on all rides south of 96th Street.
The new fee is $2.50 for yellow taxis, $2.75 for green cabs and for-hire-vehicles like Uber and Lyft. The car pool service surcharge is 75 cents.
The surcharges will be used to fund subway repairs and are expected to raise $1 million a day.
The New York Taxi Workers Alliance has responded saying they anticipate a 30 percent drop in revenue as a result of the surcharge.
Last week, a State Supreme Court judge lifted a restraining order in the taxi industry's suit against congestion pricing. It was originally expected to take effect Jan. 1.
