A man from Venezuela was shot by ICE in north Minneapolis Wednesday night after federal officials say they attacked an officer following a traffic stop. This comes exactly a week after an ICE officer fatally shot 37-year-old Renee Good

Protesters clashed with law enforcement in the area in the hours after the shooting, lighting off fireworks and throwing snowballs. Law enforcement responded with chemical irritants in an effort to disperse the crowd. Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O'Hara called it an unlawful assembly, and urged people to "leave immediately."

What they're saying:

The Department of Homeland Security in a statement Wednesday night said federal officers were conducting "a targeted traffic stop" around 6:50 p.m. on Jan. 14. The shooting happened on the 600 block of 24th Avenue North in Minneapolis, which is about 4.5 miles from where Renee Good was fatally shot on Jan. 7.

DHS said in a statement federal law enforcement officers stopped a person from Venezuela who was in the U.S. illegally. The person drove away and crashed into a parked car before taking off on foot, DHS said. After officers reached the person, two other people arrived from a nearby apartment and all three started attacking the officer, according to DHS.

"Fearing for his life and safety as he was being ambushed by three individuals, the officer fired a defensive shot to defend his life," DHS said.

The man who was shot suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to the hospital, the City of Minneapolis said in a post on social media.

The officer involved was also taken to the hospital, DHS says. The extent of the officer's injuries are not known.

The two other people involved in the incident were arrested, DHS says.

Minneapolis mayor, police chief speak on ICE shooting [RAW]

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey and Police Chief Brian O'Hara spoke about the ICE shooting that occurred in north Minneapolis Wednesday night.

O'Hara said they do not believe anyone else was transported to the hospital. But there was a report of a person having an anxiety attack inside the residence.

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey said what's happening "is not sustainable."

"This is an impossible situation that our city is presently being put in. And at the same time, we are trying to find a way forward to keep people safe, to protect our neighbors, to maintain order. And we're in a position right now where we have residents that are asking the very limited number of police officers that we have to fight ICE agents on the street to stand by their neighbors. We cannot be at a place right now in America where we have two governmental entities that are literally fighting one another," Frey said.

Meanwhile, Frey is calling for peaceful protests, noting those who are "taking the bait" are not helping anything.

"So let's be very clear. I've seen conduct from ICE that is disgusting and is intolerable," Frey said. "If it were your city, it would be unacceptable there too and for anyone that is taking the bait tonight, stop. That is not helpful. Go home. We cannot counter Donald Trump's chaos with our own brand of chaos.

"And I have seen thousands of people throughout our city peacefully protesting. For those that have peacefully protested, I applaud you. For those that are taking the bait, you are not helping and you are not helping the undocumented immigrants in our city," Frey added.

The city plans to release additional information on Thursday.

10:29 p.m. - O'Hara: Leave scene immediately

Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O'Hara said they received a call at 6:50 p.m. about a shooting. He said there was a struggle with a federal agent in front of a residence. The agent shot the man, and the man went inside the residence and refused to come out. Federal agents went inside the residence, and the man was taken to a hospital and transported to the hospital.

O'Hara says MPD secured the crime scene and the BCA and FBI are processing evidence.

Meanwhile, he said protesters are involved in unlawful acts of throwing fireworks and snowballs at law enforcement, and gas has been deployed. Police are attempting to disperse crowds. He asked anyone at the scene to "leave immediately."

"This is already a very tense situation, and we do not need this to escalate any further," O'Hara said.

DHS confirms ICE-involved shooting in Minneapolis

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) confirmed that an ICE agent shot a person in the leg as the person reportedly tried to evade arrest. During the pursuit ICE agents were reportedly assaulted by the person and two others with a snow shovel and a broomstick.

DHS released a statement about the shooting:

"At 6:50 PM CT, federal law enforcement officers were conducting a targeted traffic stop in Minneapolis of an illegal alien from Venezuela who was released into the country by Joe Biden in 2022.

"In an attempt to evade arrest, the subject fled the scene in his vehicle and crashed into a parked car. The subject then fled on foot.

"The law enforcement officer caught up to the subject on foot and attempted to apprehend him when the subject began to resist and violently assault the officer. While the subject and law enforcement were in a struggle on the ground, two subjects came out of a nearby apartment and also attacked the law enforcement officer with a snow shovel and broom handle.

"As the officer was being ambushed and attacked by the two individuals, the original subject got loose and began striking the officer with a shovel or broom stick.

"Fearing for his life and safety as he was being ambushed by three individuals, the officer fired defensive shots to defend his life. The initial subject was hit in the leg.

"All three subjects ran back into the apartment and barricaded themselves inside.

"The attacked officer and subject are both in the hospital. Both attackers are in custody.

"This attack on another brave member of law enforcement took place while Minnesota’s top leaders, Governor Walz and Mayor Frey, are actively encouraging an organized resistance to ICE and federal law enforcement officers.

"Their hateful rhetoric and resistance against men and women who are simply trying to do their jobs must end. Federal law enforcement officers are facing a 1,300% increase in assaults against them as they put their lives on the line to arrest criminals and lawbreakers."
