Massive development planned for former toxic site on Long Island
NEW YORK (FOX5NY.COM) - Residents of Syosset, Long Island, packed a public hearing on Tuesday. Most of them oppose a proposed mega-development called Syosset Park.
The development would encompass about 93 acres, some of which are a former Superfund site and also a landfill. The development would include condos, townhouses, retail, entertainment, restaurants, office space, two hotels, and a 30-acre park. The park would be over the former landfill.
Attendees booed some business leaders and residents for supporting the project.
The mall development company Simon, which owns the Roosevelt Field Mall, is part of the development team. Simon's Chuck Davis said the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will make the final decision about building on top of the landfill and the former Superfund site. He also said Simon is working on the project in a "public, transparent way."
This public hearing is not the last. Town officials will hold more hearings to continue to collect information before they make a final decision.
