Bahamian police took a man into custody in connection with the disappearance of an American woman over the weekend.

What we know:

In its statement, the Royal Bahamas Police Department revealed a 59-year-old man from the United States was detained Wednesday evening. Police said they were questioning him about a missing persons case that matched the search for Lynette Hooker.

What we don't know:

The statement did not include the name of the man who was detained, but the age police provided is within a year of the reported age of the missing woman’s husband, Brian Hooker.

The backstory:

According to police, he is being questioned about the disappearance Saturday of a woman reported missing from an eight-foot dinghy that was on its way to Elbow Cay.

Previously, Bahamian police stated that Lynette Hooker, who is roughly 56 years old, was traveling with her husband the same night, FOX News reported.

Around 7:30 p.m., the couple were in a small boat on its way to the cay when Lynette fell into the water. According to FOX News, Brian had said he tried to reach her but currents ultimately tore them apart. He added that his wife had the ignition key, leaving him to paddle back to the marina. Lynette was reported missing around 4 a.m. the next morning.

What they're saying:

Lynette Hooker’s daughter, Karli Aylesworth, spoke with FOX News previously and alleged Brian had exhibited extreme acts of violence toward Lynette and their children.

"I do believe something might have happened to her," she said during an interview with Fox News' Griff Jenkins. "There's history of him choking her out and threatening to throw her overboard. So the fact that this is actually happening makes me believe there's more to the story."

Alyesworth also described her mother as a "very fit person" who would not easily lose her footing while on a boat.
