Man charged with assaulting infant

THOMPSON, Conn. (AP) - A 26-year-old eastern Connecticut man has been charged with assaulting a 3-month-old child who suffered a fractured skull and facial bruising in May.

State police say Nicholas Guarino of Thompson turned himself in Thursday and was charged with felony risk of injury to a minor, misdemeanor assault and reckless endangerment. He posted $40,000 bail after being arraigned in Danielson Superior Court.

Child welfare officials notified state police May 15 that a 3-month-old baby from Thompson was being treated for a skull fracture and facial bruising at Connecticut Children's Medical Center in Hartford. State police say they obtained an arrest warrant for Guarino based on information gathered by detectives, the Department of Children and Families and medical center staff.

Guarino and his lawyer didn't immediately return phone messages Thursday.
