Livery driver shot multiple times by thief who got only $23

NEW YORK (AP) - A Bronx livery driver is critically injured with multiple bullet wounds after he was attacked by a rider who fled on foot with $23.

Police say the driver was shot up to seven times early Saturday near the Bronx Zoo before the assailant fled.

The victim remained in critical but stable condition at a nearby hospital.

Officer Arlene Muniz, a police spokeswoman, says the livery driver had picked up the assailant on the street elsewhere in the Bronx.

New York State Federation of Taxi Drivers spokesman Fernando Mateo says the driver is 26 years old with a wife and three daughters. Mateo says the man, originally from the Dominican Republic, has lived in the U.S. for about five years.

He says the man was shot in the abdomen.
