Escape plot unravels at NYC jail

NEW YORK (AP) - Authorities say a Manhattan jail search that was done in the wake of a drug-smuggling case has turned up an apparent escape plot.

New York City Department of Investigation Commissioner Mark Peters said Thursday that an inmate had neatly tied together 64 bedsheets and stashed them under the sink in his cell.

In the other case, authorities say a correction officer and a different inmate have been arrested in a conspiracy to smuggle drugs, cell phones, pliers and other items into the Manhattan Detention Center.

Peters and District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance Jr. said the officer worked in the detention center's mailroom.

The case was cracked after an undercover posed as an inmate. Investigators also used wiretaps.

Prosecutors say the criminal activities occurred from December until last month.
