Do children get too much homework?

Class never ends when the school bell rings. Once students get home that is when usually more work begins. Early elementary school students are getting significantly more homework than is recommended by education leaders, according to a study in the American Journal of Family Therapy. In some cases, they are getting nearly three times as much.

Parenting expert and blogger Cherie Corso knows this first hand. She has spent countless hours going over her 12-year-old daughter Julia's homework.

The National Education Association and national PTA say that students should get 10 minutes per grade level per night. For example, a first grader should get only 10 minutes, a 2nd grader 20, and so on.

One study found that excessive homework can cause high levels of stress in children and increase conflict in the home. That is why Corso says the key is communicating with your child and their teacher.
