Cancer patient knocks dinner off bucket list

Sometimes a small act of kindness is all it takes to make a big difference in someone's life. One Fort Worth nurse truly went beyond her job description.

Monica Bratten did not know she was living with bone cancer when she has severe pain in her feet.

“I thought I'd bought the wrong kind of tennis shoes,” Bratten said.

A fractured bone in her neck led doctors to find she had stage four bone cancer. At 62 years old, she thought she had a lot of time ahead and still remains positive.

Now, she can’t help thinking about the things she won’t get to do.

“I realized I'm not going to get to see my grandson go to his first day of school,” Bratten said. “I was counting on doing all those stupid things like grandma does.”

Bratten and nurse Bethany Freeze started talking about her bucket list. Bratten said she would love to eat a huge, juicy, succulent lobster,

On her day off, Freeze kept thinking about her patient’s dream.

“I thought about what I would do on my last day and I thought she shouldn't have to wait for her last day,” Freeze said.

When the manager at Pappadeaux heard about Bratten’s wish, he decided to comp the bill and add a lot to it.

“I got big tears in my eyes and I could not stop crying,” Bratten said.
