Bronx man arrested after allegedly trying to join the Taliban

A Bronx man appeared in court on Friday after being arrested at JFK International Airport allegedly attempting to join the Taliban.

Authorities say that Delowar Mohammed Hossain, 33, of the Bronx, attempted to recruit a confidential FBI source to join him in traveling to Afghanistan to join the Taliban for the purpose of killing members of the U.S. military.

Hossain allegedly bought equipment for his journey and planned to travel to Thailand to conceal his ultimate destination. From there, he would travel to Pakistan and cross the border into Afghanistan.

He is facing a single count of Attempting to Provide Material Support for Terrorism and is beind held without bail.

“The lure of radical ideologies comes from many sources, and just because the Taliban may seem like an old and out of vogue extremist group, it shouldn't be underestimated," said FBI Assistant Director-in-Charge William F. Sweeney Jr. in a statement.
