Bacon-flavored candy canes and more
NEW YORK (FOX 5 NEWS) - Candy canes are a Christmas classic. But they're not all peppermint anymore. Some of the new flavors might sour your stomach.
Economy candy co-owner Mitchell Cohen and his predecessors have sold candy canes and hundreds of other varieties of candy from their lower east side shop for the last 79 years.
The classic candy cane is a red-and-white striped, peppermint flavored upside-down J that most recognize as synonymous with this time of year. But at some point, some sugar innovator out there decided our crook-shaped holiday candy selection needed an update.
"You know, believe it or not, bacon candy canes are the new fad thing," Mitchell said.
Yes. You heard Mitchell correctly.
Bacon candy canes: making a great gag for Christmas. Want to get that minty taste? Nope. You've got bacon," Mitchell said.
In addition to the bacon canes at economy candy, one is able to raise canes of pickle, wasabi, coffee, and gravy with a quick search of "candy cane flavors" on the internet.
This Christmas, one can hang a Krampus cane or starburst cane or a no-flavor-no-stripes-no-spirit bah-humbug cane. And, apparently, people do.
Economy Candy sold out of all 200 bacon canes it ordered last year, leading Mitch to order even more of this meat-flavored candy stick this holiday season.
"You know, I've tried the bacon candy and I spit it out so fast I'm afraid of the candy cane," he said.
