Art of stippling

A picture is worth a thousand words. Or in the case of Laura Levy, it's a thousand dots. She is a senior head cut illustrator at the Wall Street Journal and a master of that iconic technique called stippling.

From CEOs to celebrities, more than 11,000 have been published since 1979. As one member of a small group of artists, Laura has done her fair share.

Each morning she gets her assignment: a photo. After printing it out, she works from her home in New Jersey to re-draw it with ink dots. One project can take a long time.

After over 35 years using this iconic technique, the Wall Street Journal's stipple head shots are instantly recognizable.
