1-year-old girl dead, twin brother critically injured in Queens

A one-year-old New York City girl is dead, her twin brother is in critical condition, and their mother is in police custody facing charges.

The NYPD responded to a 911 call to a home on Ashby Avenue in East Flushing, Queens Wednesday just before 10 p.m.  When they got there they found Elaina Torabi unconscious and unresponsive with severe trauma to her body.  Fox 5 News reported that she had lacerations on her body.  Her one-year-old brother was also found with severe trauma.

The girl was rushed to Flushing Hospital but it was too late to save her.  The boy was taken to Cohen Children's Medical Center where he remained in critical condition.  Fox 5 News reported that the boy had severe bruises and broken ribs.

The Tina Torabi, 30, was charged with felony assault but the investigation remains ongoing and the charges were expected to be upgraded after an autopsy by the medical examiner's office.

Fox 5 News reported that the mother has three other daughters, ages 2, 4, and 5.  They are now in protective custody.

The small Cape Cod-style home remained surrounded by police tape on Thursday morning and officers were stationed outside of the front door.
