NY bans Native American team names and mascots in public schools
The New York State Board of Regents has unanimously voted to prohibit public schools from using Native American team names, mascots, and logos. This decision comes after decades of advocacy from Mohawk activist John Kane and support from Indigenous organizations across the country. While some schools are pushing back, including Massapequa and Wantagh, which have Chiefs and Warriors as their mascots, respectively, the decision means schools that don't comply are at risk of losing some state funding.
