Cop killer to be paroled
video

The New York State Board of Parole has approved the release of a notorious convicted cop killer who was a member of a radical group in the 1970s. Herman Bell, 70, and two other members of the Black Liberation Army were convicted of luring Patrolman Joseph Piagentini and Patrolman Waverly Jones to a housing complex in Harlem with a 911 call and then shooting them to death in 1971. Authorities said Jones died from a single shot but Piagentini was shot 22 times. A judge sentenced Bell in 1979 to 25 years to life. New York did not have the death penalty at that time.

LIRR problems

Late and canceled trains have become the new normal for many Long Island Rail Road riders, according to a new report from New York State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli. Findings show that 2017 was, in fact, the worst year for the LIRR since 1999. The report reveals more than 19,200 trains were late last year. Of these, more than 7,000 trains were over 10 minutes late. Nearly 1,400 trains were canceled at the terminal before departure. The 5:59 p.m. train from Penn Station to Babylon had the worst on-time average of any evening peak train at 63 percent.

Making sense of subway nomenclature
video

The BMT, the IND, the IRT?if you think that all sounds like Greek to me, it is really quite simple. All three of those operating companies became part of the New York City subway system. So why is there no P train or no 8 train? So many questions, so little time. I found answers them at the New York Transit Museum in Downtown Brooklyn.

Deleting Facebook
video

For many of us, scrolling or posting on social media is part of our daily routine. But social media's immersive presence and impact on our lives are leading many young users to seek relief and hit delete. Back in December, Hill Holliday's research group Origin conducted the survey of more than 1,000 young people across the United States. The key findings: 64 percent of users between the ages of 18 and 24 said they have taken a temporary social media break and 34 percent of them deleted their accounts entirely.

Railroad service mess
video

The powerful nor'easter that pummeled the New York area Wednesday with snow, rain, and wind caused a mess on the region's railroads. Metro-North Railroad's New Haven, Harlem, and Hudson lines are all suspended as of Wednesday evening due to downed trees and "weather-related infrastructure issues," according to the MTA.

Queens bomb arrest
video

Authorities on Wednesday charged a Brooklyn man in connection with a deadly package explosion that was meant for a cop but instead killed a landlord in Queens in 2017. A joint FBI, ATF, and NYPD investigation has been underway since the summer 2017 explosion outside of a rental house in Springfield Gardens. In the course of the probe, agents and officers searched a home in the East Flatbush section of Brooklyn. Federal prosecutors charged Victor Kingsley, 37, with using a weapon of mass destruction as part of a plot to get revenge against cops that arrested him in January 2014, according to the United States Attorney's Office. But no officers lived at the home.

In the Bronx with Chief of Department Terence Monahan

After 36 years of service with the NYPD, Terence Monahan is ready to take on his biggest role yet: chief of department, the NYPD's highest-ranking uniformed member. Monahan walked us through the Parkchester neighborhood in the Bronx where he was born and bred. He has been in this new role, replacing Carlos Gomez, who retired, for about a month. Monahan always knew he wanted to join law enforcement, but claims he never expected to get this far.

Chatting digital assistants?
video

Ask Siri, the iPhone and now HomePod's digital assistant, if she knows Alexa, Amazon's competitor, and she'll respond with one of her pre-programmed responses. Often something like: "I'm sorry. I'm afraid I don't have an answer to that." That answer is a lie. And we can thank the YouTube user danrl, among others, for recording and uploading the proof to call shenanigans on Apple's duplicitous personal assistant, the first speaking machine many of us ever integrated into our lives.

Overcrowded subways

For years, subway overcrowding has taken much of the blame for bungling our commutes. But on Tuesday, the new head of New York City Transit confirmed what many New Yorkers have long suspected if not always known: Overcrowding is often not the cause of delays but an effect of them.

Subway disruptions

A bus stop in Astoria, Queens, was so packed with people Tuesday morning that a line of commuters wound around 31st Street. Out of nowhere, Astoria commuters were told the trains were canceled and they'd have to find another way to get to work. Frustrated commuters told Fox 5 that these service delays and suspensions seem to happen all too often. And they said that consider yourself lucky if just one line has a problem. Tuesday morning, the F, N, M, Q, R, and W lines suffered massive delays due to signals problems, leaving hundreds late and stranded. The delays in Astoria made for a particularly chaotic scene.

Penn Station track work
video

Track 15 at Penn Station has gotten a facelift of sorts. A section of 1,100 feet of new steel rails is just the tip of the iceberg. The work is part of Amtrak's infrastructure renewal program where replacing the old with the new came to a head last year during the so-called Summer of Hell.

Emily Chang, author of 'Brotopia'
video

Emily Chang spent two years interviewing 300 people about the so-called bro culture in Silicon Valley for her hot new book Brotopia. She stopped by Fox 5 to talk to me about the book and why it's beyond time we get more women in tech and break up the boys' club. Brotopia is about how women have been left out of the greatest wealth creation in the world, Emily says. In her mind, the title captures the idea that Silicon Valley is a modern utopia where anyone can change the world or make their own rules--if they're a man.
