Woman stabbed to death in Queens, room set on fire

A Queens woman was stabbed to death and her son was injured after police say their in-law attacked them, set their room on fire, then tried to hurt himself.

A Queens woman was killed, and her son was hospitalized Thursday after police said their in-law stabbed them in their home, then set it on fire.

What we know:

The attack happened around 4 p.m. Thursday in a multifamily home on Smart Street in Flushing. According to the NYPD, a 27-year-old man stabbed his 50-year-old mother-in-law and 17-year-old brother-in-law multiple times.

The mother-in-law did not survive. The brother-in-law was taken to the hospital.

Investigators said that after stabbing his in-laws, the man set a fire in one of the bedrooms, then tried to kill himself.

When officers got to the home, they found the suspect with a knife in hand, and tased him before arresting him.

What they're saying:

Family members who live on the bottom floor of the building said they heard yelling and went to see what was going on.

"I just saw my cousin sitting on the stairs, bleeding," said one relative. "With a paper towel up to his head bleeding, with blood all over him."

"When I went in, I saw the aunt on the floor," said another family member. "And then they said there was a guy with a knife, so I went out."

What we don't know:

Police did not identify the suspect, but relatives told FOX 5 NY that he was married to their cousin, and that he had been drinking that night. Officials told FOX 5 NY that the suspect and his wife were "going through a hard time."

What's next:

As of Thursday night, the injured 17-year-old was still in the hospital in stable condition.

Eight officers were taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation and are expected to be okay.
