What to buy in January

If you've recovered from the holiday shopping hangover and are ready to shop again, January has some great deals.

Smart shopping expert Trae Bodge of Slickdeals says January is all about the guys. Look for 20 percent to 50 percent off men's apparel.

Trae says that includes athletic apparel and particularly outerwear as retailers look to get rid of coats and stock their shelves with spring merchandise. Suits and other men's clothing should also be on sale.

Macy's has menswear 60 percent to 80 percent off.

Bloomingdale's has blazers, suits, and tuxedos 30 percent to 70 percent off.

Lord & Taylor has over 40 percent off men's activewear.

This is also a big month for linens. The so-called white sales, which Trae says have been around since the 1800s, happen in January. Any retailer that carries bedding or bath should be offering great deals on sheets and towels. Trae says to look for 20 percent to 50 percent off.

Overstock is offering up to 70 percent off plus free shipping during its Winter White Blowout.

Pottery Barn has 20 percent off towels and bedding.

The Company Store's Semi-Annual White Sale is on now.

And Trae says, expect even bigger discounts in the middle of the month, around Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

If you're trying to get in better shape in 2018, expect discounts in all of those 'New Year New You' categories this month. Trae says athletic apparel, fitness equipment, and things like protein powders will all be on sale. Also look for discounts on gym memberships.

Planet Fitness is offering memberships for $1 down and $10 a month.

New York Sports Clubs is offering $1 down and no dues until March.

If you need to improve your financial fitness this year, you'll find some deals there, too. Tax software is on sale this month. Trae says to check out eBay and Amazon for deals on Turbo Tax or H&R Block software.

This isn't a good month to buy mattresses. Wait until President's Week in February for discounts on beds. Even better, hold out until Memorial Day for bigger sales.

Also, avoid buying toys, which were discounted ahead of the holidays. Trae says you won't find great toy deals this month.
