Web developers in demand in NYC

NEW YORK (FOX 5 NY) - Tech hiring is up in New York in the second half of 2017 and web developers have some of the hottest jobs on the market.

Ryan Sutton, District President at staffing agency Robert Half Technology, says web developers’ salaries are crossing $175,000 to $200.000 a year in New York City.

Developers have big skill sets, he says, and great earnings potential.

At a more junior level, web developers with zero to three years of experience can expect to make in the $60,000 to $80,000 range.

Ryan says those starting salaries are projected to go up 5% to 10% in the next year or two.

It’s easy to see why web developers are so popular these days.

We’re on our smartphones, on the web, all the time.

And, Ryan says, if you think about our personal buying trends, every holiday season we talk about the increased percentage of retail done on the web.

The developers are the people who make the magic happen on the web, building and improving the sites we love.

Ryan says the web developer is the person who either builds something from scratch or goes in and updates it.

Glance at any web developer job listing and you’ll see the skill set required.

They need to know languages like: JavaScript, HTML, CSS, PHP, and the database system MySQL.

You can’t learn those overnight, but you can get into the booming tech business without a ton of experience, if you have strong people skills.

Ryan says team skills are a huge trend in tech.

Beyond that, general communications skills are essential because tech jobs involve a lot of communication with non-techies.

Just picture two web developers, literally talking in code, Ryan says.

Tech companies need people with experience outside of tech, plus strong communications and team building skills.

Try getting involved in a small project at your current job to see if working in tech might be a good fit for you.

For example, if your company is going through a new accounting software upgrade and you’re an accountant, ask to get involved.

Dip your toes in the water, Ryan says, and see if you like project management and technology.

That could be a great segue in.

Also don’t underestimate the value of getting in on the ground floor.

Just yesterday we saw Amazon hiring 50,000 people to work in their fulfillment centers.

These jobs don’t require technology skills and offer some great perks: stock options, a 401k with a company match, and even tuition assistance.

It’s a great way to get started and work towards a higher level goal.
