NEW YORK (FOX 5 NY) - Police say a suspicious package left on a New York City subway platform before a man jumped in front of a train turned out to be an umbrella and a thermos.
Police found the items inside the backpack of a man who jumped in front of a subway train in an apparent suicide attempt in Ozone Park, Queens on Friday morning but later gave an "all clear" after an investigation.
A police source told FOX 5 that the thermos was originally thought to be a pipe bomb.
The incident took place about 6:30 a.m. on the A train track at Liberty Ave. and 80th Street. The 68-year-old man was taken to Jamaica Hospital in critical condition and was not expected to survive.
Police officers found a backpack on the platform. Inside of it they found what they thought was a gray pipe with wrapped in electrical tape with caps on the ends. It ended up being a harmless thermos.
The bomb squad had been called to the station to investigate.
Service had been suspended on the A line between Euclid Ave. in Brooklyn and Lefferts Boulevard in Queens. It resumed just before 9 a.m.
