Teens still get bored despite endless content at fingertips

You'd think with all the apps and video games out there it would be tough for today's teens to get bored easily. But reporter Taylor Lorenz said you'd be surprised.

"There's a common sort of misconception that they are never bored because they have access to this type of technology," Lorenz said. "But in fact, in speaking to many teens I found out they actually do experience boredom. It's just a different type of bored."

She writes about all things teen and tech for The Daily Beast. Her latest article is about a new type of teen boredom called "phone bored."

Joyce Safdiah, 14, is a member of Generation Z, made up of tech-savvy people born in the late 1990s to mid-2000s. She summed up what it means to be "phone bored."

"Phone bored is when you are on Instagram or Twitter and you are still not entertained, even though you have all this content at your fingertips," Safdiah said. "It feels like everything is just the same even if there is so much of it."

In Lorenz's opinion, you can't blame your phone for making you inattentive. She said that teens have always experienced boredom. It just manifests differently throughout the generations.

"It's really easy to think of what our parents said, you know, 'Oh, in our days we had to go outside and maybe wander around the neighborhood,'" Lorenz said. "I think other people would just flip through TV channels."

So whether you're phone bored, TV bored, radio bored, whatever, just remember that you're not alone!
