Schumer: LI town shouldn't have to repay FEMA aid

NEW YORK (FOX 5 NEWS) - Sen. Charles Schumer says that FEMA wants nearly $10 million back from the Town of North Hempstead and about $650,000 back from the Long Beach School District on Long Island, and he calls that "crazy." The money was used to make repairs after Superstorm Sandy. He says that most of the money has been spent and that FEMA approved it.

But now a report from the Inspector General's Office says the money should not have been allocated. FEMA wants it back four years later.  

Schumer says if fraud was the issue he would understand, but that is not the case here. He says that no one says the money was misspent. Town of North Hempstead Supervisor Judi Bosworth says that the town followed FEMA procedures

Schumer says he has done battle with FEMA in the past over the financial assistance granted for Superstorm Sandy.

A spokesman for FEMA says in a statement: "We continue to work with federal, state and local officials to address the compliance issues in both these cases. We look forward to a resolution in each case."
