Sanitation Department holiday gift guide: Shop at thrift stores

When it comes to holiday shopping, everyone has advice on what you should buy for your loved ones. But would you take shopping tips from the Department of Sanitation?

Garbage pickup and plowing snow (well, at least most of the time) are what we've come to expect from our Department of Sanitation.

But on top or keeping our streets clean, the department would now also like to suggest a pair of gently used Manolo Blahniks or a vintage guitar as part of its first holiday gift guide.

Sanitation and shopping may not seem to go hand-in-hand. But the gift guide is less about fashion advice and more about reducing waste.

"By shopping at a thrift store, you can not only get your loved one a memorable gift but you can also divert waste from a landfill," Eszter Csisai, the senior manager of reuse and donations, told Fox 5. "You can also support nonprofits that provide social services to New Yorkers in need,"

The gift guide comes from Donate NYC, a DSNY program that facilitates donating and reusing goods instead of discarding them.

"In 2017, Donate NYC partners diverted over 98 million pounds of items from landfill through donations and reuse," Csisai said, "which is the equivalent of keeping over 37,000 cars off the road for a year."

The guide features items from Donate NYC partner organizations, such as Goodwill and Housing Works, who accept donated goods and resell them to fund various social services.

So whether you take their recommendations or not, this holiday season DSNY urges you to think about how you can do good for other New Yorkers and the planet.
