Rip current dangers heightened along NYC, NJ, LI

There is a high risk of rip currents along ocean-facing beaches in the Tri-state region this week and possibly through the weekend.

Hurricane Gaston and a tropical depression off the coast of the Carolinas is making the surf dangerous for swimmers of all levels.

On Monday, a 26-year-old man from Brooklyn drowned when he was caught in a rip current on Long Beach, Long Island. Another man was injured.

The pair were in the water during a time when lifeguards were no longer on duty.

On Tuesday, lifeguards announced the water at Long Beach was too dangerous for swimming.

The condition for swimming would be re-evaluated later in the day.

If you get caught in a rip current, remain calm, let the current bring you out and swim parallel to the beach when you can as you make your way back to the shore. Click here for more safety tips.
