Queens Pepsi-Cola sign landmarked

NEW YORK (FOX 5 NEWS) - The New York City Council voted to landmark the iconic Pepsi-Cola sign that has sat on the Long Island City waterfront for more than 90 years.

The vote, 43-0, formalizes the Landmarks Preservation Commission's designation this spring.

"Today, after long last, we've officially made the sign a New York City landmark, and this staggering piece of pop art will now shine forever across the East River," Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer said in a statement. He represents the district where the Pepsi sign is located.

The sign was on the commission's backlog for more than 28 years. It is technically a reconstruction of the original sign, which was damaged in a winter storm.

The sign is now located in Gantry Plaza State Park, but originally appeared on top of a PepsiCo. plant that closed in 1999.
