Pentagon unveils medal for fight against ISIS

The Pentagon has unveiled a new medal for service members who have served in Operation Inherent Resolve, the campaign against ISIS.

Military members who are serving, or have served, "in Iraq, Syria, or contiguous waters or airspace" since June 15, 2014, and meet other eligibility criteria are authorized to wear the medal, the Department of Defense announced.

Service members must spend at least 30 consecutive days or a total of 60 nonconsecutive days in Iraq or Syria. That 30-day minimum will be waived under certain circumstances.

Thousands of troops are eligible for the new medal.
