A new group of heroes joined the ranks of the FDNY on Wednesday; 311 probationary firefighters graduated during a ceremony in Brooklyn.

This class had plenty of inspiration on the path to becoming New York's Bravest. The class featured two third-generation firefighters. But for the first time in the FDNY's 153-year history, a child followed in his mother's footsteps.

Marianne Monahan is an FDNY trailblazer. She was part of the first graduating class to include women. Over her 21-year-career, she climbed the ladder and retired from the department as a captain in 2003.

Her son Matthew Fiorito has served as an EMT in the FDNY for more than five years. Monahan said that as a kid Matthew always wanted to be a firefighter and would put on her gear. And now, he is living his dream by becoming a firefighter. She said she is very proud of him.

Most families shared the pride. But for some, it came under more emotional circumstances. Terrance Pfeifer, who first joined the department as an EMT in 2015, is the son of beloved FDNY hero Ray Pfeifer. Ray, a 28-year veteran of the department, died one year ago from 9/11-related cancer.

Christopher Froelich also followed his father's career path in joining the FDNY. Unfortunately, George Froelich died less than three weeks ago from 9/11-related cancer.

This graduation day was very emotional and inspiring for many who attended and participated.
