Murray's debuts shop for mac and cheese

Murray's Cheese Shop in Greenwich Village is a New York institution for all things cheese. And now right next to the flagship location, Murray's Mac and Cheese has opened offering more items to tempt your taste buds.

Executive Chef David Elkins calls the new concept a "customizable mac and cheese restaurant. He said people have a special love for the warm and gooey meal.

"It's definitely a comfort food," Elkins said. I think there is a lot of nostalgia associated with it."

The build-a-bowl model starts with one to three scoops of classic baked mac and cheese. You can choose from over 30 toppings, including vegetables (Broccoli, roasted red peppers, English peas, caramelized onions), and meats (Prosciutto, chorizo, pepperoni and more). Everything is heated up in a cast-iron pan and ready for pick up in just a few minutes. you can choose from four serving sizes.

The most popular dish is the Buffalo chicken. It is made with chicken, of course, bleu cheese, New York cheddar cheese, ranch dressing, and Buffalo sauce.

"I don't know what it is about Buffalo sauce, but you can put that on anything and people will really like it," Elkins said.

If the numerous choices feel overwhelming, five preset combos are spelled out on the big board above the counter.

Open daily from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., the pop-up shop will be on Bleecker Street for at least four months.
