It was the big reveal of Vessel. The public landmark will serve as the centerpiece in the Public Square and Gardens once the Hudson Yards project is complete on the west side of Manhattan. To make it and install it, will cost roughly $150 million. Thomas Heatherwick is the man behind the intricate design.

"It's 250 stairs, 16 stories high, it's like a keep fit device with 80 different, they're like little plazas all raised up and arranged around," says Heatherwick, the founder and design director at Heatherwick.

It's a mile of walking space, wrapped around, and will be free to visitors. Vessel will sit in the middle of public plazas and gardens connected to the High Line, re-energizing this corner of the city.

"The Public Square and Gardens will have over five acres of open green space, an extraordinary contribution to this city," Mayor Bill de Blasio says.

Hudson Yards is the largest private real estate development project in the country's history. It will stretch from 30th Street to 34th Street between 10th Avenue and the West Side Highway. There will be more than a hundred shops, residences, a public school, and luxury hotel. The estimated $25 billion project is being developed by Oxford Properties Group and Stephen Ross, Chairman of Related Companies.

"It's really a city within a city," Ross says. "It's a live-work-play environment and that's what people really want to be in today and I think that's what people look in other cities and other parts of the city, will look to adopt this."

The Public Square and Vessel will be open in 2018, but we will have to wait a little longer to see the completed Hudson Yards project, which should be done by 2025.
