Funeral set for trooper who died of 9/11-related illness

A New York state trooper who died of a 9/11-related illness will be honored and laid to rest next week.

Trooper Michael J. Anson died Tuesday from an illness stemming from his assignment at the World Trade Center site following the terrorist attack on September 11, 2001. Trooper Anson was involved with search-and-recovery efforts.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo directed that flags on all state government buildings be flown at half-staff on January 9 in Trooper Anson's honor.

"Trooper Anson embodied all of what it means to be a member of the State Police: Dedicated, tough, and committed to his colleagues, friends, family and community," Cuomo said. "He made the ultimate sacrifice through his selfless service at Ground Zero following the 9/11 attacks. I ask all New Yorkers to join me in offering our thoughts and prayers to his family, friends and colleagues at the New York State Police."

Trooper Anson, 56, entered the State Police on September 22, 1986, and served for 31 years.

Trooper Anson served as a school resource officer from 2003 to 2010 in the Averill Park and Brunswick School Districts.

In addition, Trooper Anson served as an academy training officer at the Basic School for multiple classes from 2012 to 2017.

Trooper Anson, of Albany County, is survived by his wife, their three children, and his brothers.

Services for Trooper Anson will be held Monday, January 8, 2018, and Tuesday, January 9, 2018.
